Lesson 1 - “That Ye Might Believe That Jesus Is the Christ”
Isaiah 61:1–3; Joseph Smith Translation, Luke 3:4–11; John 1:1–14; John 20:31
• What do you learn about Jesus Christ from John 1:1–3, John 1:14? (Note that “the Word” in John 1:1, John 1:14 refers to the Savior. Use the Joseph Smith Translation of these verses if it is available.)
• The Apostle John said that “in [Jesus] was life” (John 1:4). He also testified that Jesus is “the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world” (John 1:9). How has the Savior given you life and light?
• What accounts or teachings in the New Testament have particularly inspired or helped you? How might studying the New Testament this year help strengthen your testimony of Jesus Christ?
Suggestion for Family Discussion
Read John 1:1–3 or Joseph Smith Translation, John 1:1–3. Explain that Jesus (“the Word” in John 1:1–3) created the earth under Heavenly Father’s direction. Take a walk as a family, giving close attention to the many beauties of creation.
Scripture Chain: Jesus Christ’s Foreordained Mission
John 1:1–5
Mosiah 3:5–10
John 1:9–17
Isaiah 61:1–2
Abraham 3:22–27
Luke 4:16–21
In Isaiah 61:1-3 it seems that Isaiah is speaking of his own calling as a prophet. Yet in Luke 4:16-21 Christ reads the 1st verse and part of the 2nd in the synagogue at the beginning of His ministry, clearly giving a Messianic depth to these passages. It also seems that the Jews understood that these passages referred to the Messiah.
Christ quoted only the first two verses, but we should not overlook the third, which expands on the comforting influence of the Savior in our lives.
HEY!! No fair, I want to read the "Redacted" comment. Who sent it? In fact, I think that if anyone has a problem with anyone else-we should just get it all out in the open-like a sweidsh massge: it hurts like crazy, some people even throw up, but the next day you feel great.
Sorry, now I'll play nice.
My favorite reason for studying the New Testament is to see how Christ interacts with people, how He feels about them, and how different people resond to Him. Then, it's interesting to see people's how other people teach the things that He taught.
I had an opportunity to teach a Plan of Salvation lesson last Sunday in RS. And I had an overwelming feeling of how much the Savior loves me--all of us--while I was teaching. I think we each need that individual reminder sometimes. This gospel we preach is for each one us very individually. That is my favorite reason to read the New Testament: to remember how much the Savior loves us.
